Inflatable seal: how it works

Versatile solutions for hermetic seals

Inflatable seals are versatile devices used in various industrial applications to create a hermetic seal that can adapt to different shapes and sizes.

In this article, we will explore the advantages of inflatable seals and how they work.

Inflatable seal: how it works

What is an inflatable seal?

It is a flexible device made of elastic materials that can be inflated or deflated to create a hermetic seal. It consists of two or more layers of material, including an inner layer that is pressure-resistant and an outer layer that protects the seal from external agents.

The advantages of inflatable seals

An inflatable seal offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it can adapt to a variety of shapes and sizes, allowing for effective sealing even in complex situations.

Furthermore, they can be easily installed in various configurations, including inward radial, outward radial, or axial orientations, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.

Inflatable seals are easy to install and remove, reducing machine downtime and maintenance costs.

How does an inflatable seal work?

The operation is based on a simple yet effective process that allows them to adapt to the shapes and irregularities of the surrounding surfaces.

The process begins when gas or fluid is supplied to the inflation chamber of the seal. This can be done manually or through the use of an automated control system. The gas or fluid input is facilitated through a specifically designed inflation valve.

As the pressure increases, the elastic material of the seal starts to expand. This expansion allows the seal to adapt to the surrounding shapes and surfaces, filling any gaps and creating a solid barrier between the mounting surface and the mating surface.

When it is necessary to remove the seal, the pressure inside the inflation chamber is reduced, allowing the elastic material to contract and return to its original state.

The role of Fugesco

At Fugesco, we specialize in the commercialization of inflatable seals with operating pressures ranging from 10 to 150 PSI. Expansion capabilities of this type of seals allows to close a 1/8" to 1/4" ( 3 to 6mm) radial "gap", depending on the cross section of the inflatable seal.

Furthermore, thanks to a team of professional experts, we are capable of manufacturing custom inflatable seals. Our expertise in the field of custom inflatable seals allows us to provide innovative and reliable solutions for even the most complex sealing challenges.
